Teaching

Roles

  • Course coordinator (see 'Guidelines for Teachers at ICIS', p4)
  • Course examiner (see 'Guidelines for Teachers at ICIS', p4)

Mandatory Administrative Tools

Please note that these mandatory tools must take a key role. At least as course coordinator you have to engage with all of them.

  • Brightspace is the communication interface between lecturers and students. Each instance (year) of each course has its own space there. Students can expect all course relevant information to be there. Some suggestions on how to make effective use of Brightspace can be found in the Brightspace advice from students to teachers (pdf).
  • Osiris is the interface for registering marks and marks only.
  • Course Dossiers is the interface for storing official course documentation; starting from course descriptions, exam papers and solution, all the way to student and teacher feedback. Once you enter, you can follow the folders; start with OII (the official name of the educational institute of CS); then select the year; followed by your course-code. Please make sure that you upload all the information for the marked folders below in the EduView description.
  • EduView is not officially a mandatory tool, but it helps to check whether your Course Dossiers are complete. As the tool is partially in Dutch and partially in English, hereby a short description how it works.
    • Navigate to https://eduview.science.ru.nl. Note that this site is only available within the RU network, so you may need to start a VPN first.
    • Use the green 'Sign in' button. (The grey one on top doesn't seem to work.)
    • Log in using your u-number and RU-password.
    • Now click on 'Course data' in the menu bar and opt for 'Course files'.
    • You will now get a table with green check marks and/or red crosses for the currently selected year, showing which documents are and which are not found in the course files of your course(s). Obviously, the goal is that there are only green check marks!
    • You can change the year by clicking on the listed year at the top of the page and select a different one.
    • The labels of the columns are in Dutch, but they refer to the folders in the course file folder. The order is a bit different from the order of the folders. The EduView labels that correspond to the folders are indicated in bold.
      • 01_CourseDescription_auto beschr: This folder should contain the course description. The contents are automatically extracted from Osiris.
      • 02_LearningObjectives_auto doel: This folder should contain the learning objectives. The contents are automatically extracted from Osiris.
      • 03_CourseScheduleSurvey: This folder is currently not used.
      • 04_Eval_Students stud.eval.: This folder should contain the students' evaluation. The contents are automatically placed there.
      • 05_Eval_Lecturer doc.eval.: This folder should contain the teacher's response to the students' evaluation.
      • 06_Eval_PC oord.: This folder should contain the verdict of the programme committee about the teacher's evaluation. The contents are automatically placed there.
      • 07_Exam tent: This folder should contain the exam and other items like projects or large assignments that contribute to the final mark. Note that this also holds for digital ANS exams. Fortunately, ANS has an option to export the exam as a PDF by going to the course, the exam, then the 'Settings' tab, and then the 'General' option in the menu on the left. There should now be a 'Print assignment' section on the right if you scroll down a bit and you can choose between the exam only and the grading model, which should got to the next folder.
      • 08_ExamAnswerTemplate corr.: This folder should contain a detailed grading model of the exams and all other items that contribute to the final grade. Essentially, all parts that were included in folder 07_Exam should have a grading model in this folder.
      • 09_ExamTestMatrix matrix: This folder should contain the test matrix relating the learning goals to the exam questions, projects, assignments, and other items that contribute to the final grade.
      • 10_Resit her: This folder is the analogon of folder 07_Exam, but now for the resit.
      • 11_ResitAnswerTemplate her.corr.: This folder is the analogon of folder 08_ExamAnswerTemplate, but now for the resit.
      • 12_ResitTestMatrix her.matrix: This folder is the analogon of folder 09_ExamTestMatrix, but now for the resit.
      • 13_Eval_ExamBoard: This folder contains the verdict of the Examination Board about the quality of the course files.
      • 14_Oral_Exam: This folder should be used to upload recordings of oral exams, if any.
    • Note that the EduView system only checks whether there is a PDF available in the corresponding folders. EduView doesn't state anything about the quality of the files in the course files folders.
    • A check on the quality of the course files is done by the Examination Board every year on a sample of 25% of all the courses.

Support

Educational support at the faculty level is collected within the Teaching Information Point, or TIP, for short. As a lecturer/teacher, you can go there with questions about course design, course implementation, (digital) testing and evaluation of education, see also the university website. At our faculty, you can turn to the following people for help:

  • Esther Diebels and Sven Vrins: didactical and educational questions about course design and assessment.
  • Angelique Thijssen and Esther Diebels: didactical advice about the use of ICT tools in education. Contact them via e-mail: tipscience@ru.nl.
  • Yvonne Cornelissen and Désirée Cammelbeeck: questions related to digital assessment (Ans, in particular). The easiest to contact them via e-mail: digitalassessment-fnwi@ru.nl.
  • Maartje Leenders: questions related to OSIRIS. . The easiest to contact her via e-mail: osiris-support-science@ru.nl.

At iCIS, you can contact the Education Innovator for support.
